Presentation abstract: According to the CIPD unplanned absence was responsible for an average of 8.3 days lost per employee per year in 2015 with a median cost of £554 per employee per year. Reducing unplanned absence by 0.5 days per employee would, on average for an organisation with 5,000 workers save the organisation around £167,000 a year.

Common approaches to managing short term unplanned absence are Return to Work Interviews, trigger mechanisms, and absence information given to line managers to allow them to take primary responsibility for managing absence.

Organisations often struggle to collect accurate information or provide line managers access to real time data on which to base decisions.

Applaud Solutions and Oracle EBS were used to create an engaging interface allowing absence data to be recorded, approved and reviewed through desktops and mobiles. The presentation traces the implementation journey including lessons learnt, and an assessment of the effectiveness of the solution.
